The name Satan means The Great Separator.
Judgment IS separation! A piece apart from the whole can't live on its own for very long.
Good and Evil is Dualistic. Once something is labeled as "Good", "Bad" or "Other" that is a Separation!
Judgement is Discernment. Now, there is nothing wrong with being Discerning in order to Differentiate. We are out of the Garden of Eden, after all. The Garden was during the time of PRE-separation! Just don't become all Judge-y, or YOU might find yourself locked out of your own Garden!
Mysticism is really about getting back into the Garden. When you attack or even defend though, that act crystalizes the SELF, thus separating your own Ego from the Whole.
Animals do not think about thinking. They live by instinct alone. We humans think AND think about thinking. The Ego is born and now we feel Separate from God!
Here's the deal: Whatever you choose to call them ~ Satan, Devils, Demons, E.T.s, Ghosts, Curses, Entities ~ they WANT us to be separate from the Source! When you divide, you conquer. And guess where they get their Food? Our Energy is their Food!! Remember, THEY are Separate too!!
They will do their best to keep you from your friends, family and loved ones. It is when you are surrounded by your Tribe that you feel the closest to being in The Garden! We can't have THAT! sarcasm
Separation is what causes Jealousy. Jealousy is an outsider seeing and coveting what you have. This is why "Do Not Covet" is one of the Ten Commandments. It sucks being/feeling Separate, but don't separate people from each other! Or you, too, will (once again) find yourself out in the cold!
Freewill, though it got us in trouble in the first place when Eve chose the apple, is the very thing that makes humans Unique. Life's Mastery is only possible if Evil is there as a counter-weight. You can't be truly Righteous unless you are FREE to choose to reject Evil.
Satan originally worked for God as His head angel. His job was to block our path, on behalf of The Kingdom, to save us from sinning in the first place. In Numbers 22, Balaam was a diviner and (according to Philo in The Life of Moses) a great magician. He was on a certain (literal and figurative) path when Satan's Angel appeared before him. The donkey freaked out and started talking. This was all so Balaam would choose any path but the one he was on!
Satan's role as a Path Blocker got distorted, however. In the book of Job he would TEST people, hoping to bring any badness out in sharp relief. To his disappointment, there was no evil in Job, even after inflicting over the top suffering upon him. Satan then became known as The Accuser if we fail the tests. He is doing his job too well if we are tested before we even get on the wrong path!
In 1 Chronicles 21:1 Satan goes overboard and INCITES King David to sin against God. Instead of trusting God, David takes a census (with a little unholy influence). God gets angry at the king's "Let's see how many strong young men I have" pride. God allows Satan to attach through David to expose Israel though. Is He mad at the wrong being?
Satan is like a teacher who tells us what NOT to do when we are Freshmen. Then he tests us Sophomore Year. Junior Year, to our chagrin, this teacher ACTIVELY tries to make us mess up! By Senior Year, we wonder if we will ever make it to college!
The M.O. seems to be showing us that we are NOT perfect! That we ARE, make no mistake, separated from God!
In Zechariah 3:1-2, though, God finally gets in on the act, and fires Satan (in this one instance) when he tried to accuse Joshua the Head Priest! Maybe we're not so Separate, after all! ;)
